The Fall 2011-2012 resident assistants have been chosen. Nineteen students were chosen from a group of 35 applicants.

Olsen, a junior in Sutton, will return for a second year as an RA.

“I applied because I wanted to get a better sense of the community on campus while being able to participate and add to that community myself,” she said. “I also wanted to meet and form relationships with more people, and this was a good way to do that.”

According to Anderson, the application included three personal references and asked about what it means to be a good RA and the most important issue that needs to be addressed in the residence halls.

The next step in the process was an interview conducted Tony Jones, director of student success and disability servives. Hart and Webb hall RAs also took part in the interviewing process.

According to the school handbook, resident assistants are responsible for helping the residence director create and maintain a living and learning environment where students’ educational, social, cultural, and spiritual needs can be fostered.

Senior Alicia Engle, an RA in Hart, said that working as an RA has helped her build stronger relationships on campus.

“It has definitely helped me feel more connected in the Milligan community,” she said. “I feel like I see familiar faces all the time, and it is very refreshing to feel a connection among Milligan students and like you are a part of a community.”

Other responsibilities of an RA include being available and visible to the student in the residence hall and helping residents maintain quiet hours for study and sleep time.
