The Milligan College Buffaloes soccer team fell short in their 2011 season opener, 5-3, to Georgetown (Ky.) College on Wednesday night at Anglin Field.
The Buffaloes scored first as Rachel Martin (Blountville) scored in the third minute. Georgetown answered with a goal in the 22nd minute. Martin scored again in the 35th minute to put the Buffaloes back on top. Georgetown evened the score at two just before halftime.
Samantha Barton (Marietta, Ga.) put the Buffaloes back in the lead with a corner kick in the 59th minute. Georgetown went on to score three more goals and took the victory.
“I felt like we didn’t do the little things,” head coach Lisa Buckley said.
Buckley said she was pleased with the tempo of the game and the way her players kept fighting. The Buffaloes missed some golden opportunities late in the game that could have changed the overall outcome.
“You could tell it was a season opener,” Buckley said.
Rachel Martin was the team-leading scorer last year with eight goals.
“I think it was good for my confidence,” Martin said. “I think we will have a lot more options this year.”
The Buffaloes return to action on Saturday when they host nonconference opponent Brenau University (Ga.). Game time is set for 4 p.m. at Anglin Field.
