The Gilliam Wellness Center offers many workout classes for students, ranging from yoga, to strength training, to the newly developed spinning class.
The spin class has recently sparked the interest of Milligan College students and is offered every Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. The class is open on a first-come-first-serve basis to nine students and lasts 45 to 60 minutes, depending on the specific workout.
Spinning is an aerobic exercise that takes place on a stationary bike, and is a great cardio workout. Spinning not only works the lower body and gluteal regions, but it is also a great core exercise.
Jared Abel, a junior nursing major, started teaching the course in early September, and decided to teach spin because of his knowledge and love for cycling.
“I passed my testing and as of January 1st 2012, I will be a USA Cycling licensed coach,” Abel said. “I thought teaching spin would be a great way to make the transition into coaching people in the collegiate age group.”
Anna Lennox, a freshman at Milligan, began taking spin class at the Wellness Center this year, and thoroughly enjoys the class.
“I do the spin class because it’s a great workout, and its nice to change up my workouts. Normally I run so this is great because it works a different set of muscles, and no matter how in shape you are you can always push yourself harder,” Lennox said.
Lennox likes that a student who is knowledgeable and encouraging teaches the class.
“Jared Abel is awesome. He pushes you throughout the workout, and he changes the resistance to simulate being on a bike outside,” Lennox said. “He’s not afraid to push you, but he doesn’t give you more than you can handle.”
Coordinator of Wellness and Recreation Activities, Chris Webb, believes spin class is a great program as well, and is looking forward to the cycling class’s potential.
“As long as it is something that has a pull of interest from the student population, I would love for it to gain popularity and have a need to purchase more bikes or make a second class,” Webb stated.
