Students and faculty were impacted last week during Milligan’s annual Spiritual Renewal Week. The week started off in the Student Union Building with music provided by Ryan Hughes with Tyler Ward speaking. The week continued with success as every day hosted a different spiritually uplifting event.
This year’s Spiritual Renewal Week received positive feedback as well as some advice for next year’s events.
“I have gained a new sense of what it means to pray and how important it is to have a prayer partner,” said Kelly Aubrey, a junior education major. “If somehow they implemented it in with our regular classes like talking about it in humanities, or bible, or any other classes for that matter, then maybe it would have a bigger impact on my life, my friends and the rest of the campus.”
Last Tuesday’s convo proved successful with Dean Trune, director of Intentional Impact Living Ministries, introducing the topic of the week, “Rooted.” In his sermon, Trune explained the importance of spiritual disciplines including prayer, scripture meditation and community.
Trune encouraged students to practice spiritual disciplines by hosting a “prayer concert” on Tuesday evening for SFP credit. Over 30 students participated in dividing into small groups and praying for their personal relationship with God as well as Milligan’s community as a whole.
Trune spoke again in chapel on Thursday, saying he wanted to warn students of the dangers of arrogance in Christianity.
The response to Trune’s sermon could be seen at the devotional breakfast held the next morning with speaker Elizabeth Gentry. Over 25 people participated in the early 7:30 breakfast. Gentry spoke on Hebrews 10:11-16 and about how Christianity “often turns into a to-do list.”
“That’s not how it’s supposed to be,” Gentry said.
The Campus Ministry Team played a large role in putting Spiritual Renewal Week into motion.
“Since I am on the Campus Ministry Team, we prayed a lot about this and we felt that Dean Trune was just the right guy to speak,” Gentry said, “I hope everyone on campus got something out of it.”
