Milligan’s Vespers service kicked off Justice Week on Sunday night with guest speaker Donald Mushayamunda, founder of Mushayamunda Christian Development Foundation, an organization devoted to serving communities, especially those affected by the AIDs epidemic.
Mushayamunda spoke about social injustice and how to rectify it as a Christian community. He encouraged students to turn to Scripture to discover what true justice is.
The service, sponsored by Cross Cultural Missions Committee, was held in lower Seeger and over 40 students were in attendance. Among them was freshman Jenevieve Buehrens.
“Tonight’s event was really inspirational,” Buehrens said. She hopes Milligan’s community will respond positively and perhaps make some spiritual changes on campus.
Freshman Michael Mohsen led worship and was affected just as much with the preparation for tonight as he was the actual service.
“I spent a lot of time in prayer,” Mohsen said. “The worship was like an emptying of myself and allowing God to do all the work. The service was a great kick-off and allowed people to think about what they can do to end social injustice both globally and here.”
During the worship portion of the night, junior Ryan Hughes painted a picture which symbolized God’s role in assisting in social justice and read the words, “Loose the Chains of Social Injustice.”
Between each song, students read various Bible verses about what justice means to them.
Before the full worship set, Mushayamunda spoke not only on what justice means, but also about how to accomplish social justice in the present time and within the Milligan bubble.
Mushayamunda ended his sermon with this question to Milligan’s community: “Are you willing to be called into God’s plan of social justice? What will it take to make you move?”
