Milligan’s record enrollment has lead to students finding the library too crowded for study time. Even though the library is conducive for learning, many students see its popularity as a problem.
Junior nursing major, Toleshi Tereasa said, “I wish we had a bigger library and more study rooms.”
Gary Daught, Director of Library Services, says that Academic library space planning standards have recommended that Milligan provide seating for 10% of the student body.
“Based on this figure, we now have enough seating to support a student body of 1,500 at full capacity,” said Daught.
The library was expanded to provide more study space by reducing book areas and making “quiet zones” for students who enjoy individual study time.
The library has come a long way in what it offers its students, but some students still want to see more improvements made in the library.
Students enjoy studying in the library because it offers reference areas, tutoring, and refreshments such as coffee and tea. Students realize that bigger space would be beneficial to members of Milligan’s campus.
Even though the library is keeping up with academic standards, a space problem still exists.
“If the college continues to grow our only option is to explore enlarging the library building in some way,” Daught said.
While the library is exploring options for expansion, students are searching for solutions to their study issues.
Junior Tyler Brackins, said during finals week students find creative places to study including the basement of the communications building and empty classrooms in Derthick.
While the library continues to better their facilities, students can find other places on campus to study when they feel it is necessary.
