Today last year, on this sacred day that is Valentine’s Day, I was determined not to spend the day alone. I’m sure some people think this lovey-dovey holiday is a waste of time, but it’s not so fun after a break-up. You feel me?
I gathered probably 12 of my closest SINGLE girlfriends and planned a big Valentine’s Day evening. We reserved a huge table at Miso’s Teriyaki House in Johnson City. Naturally, I devoured my giant plate of teriyaki chicken and rice. Praise the Lord.
You can guess what we did next.
It seems like every year Nicholas Sparks makes a film catered to us young 18 to 25 year old girls longing for love but clearly not getting any of it. We flock to the theaters in hopes that his next great love story will be as epic as “The Notebook,” but it rarely ever is.
That doesn’t stop us, though. Last year, we went to see “The Vow.” And if you saw it, you obviously know Channing Tatum owned that film. He’s definitely matured since “Step Up” was released back in 2006. Look at what six years can do to a man.
After 104 minutes of not knowing if Rachel McAdams’ character would regain her memory, we were faced with the fact that it was hopeless. We still don’t know how their relationship concluded.
The night ended with a much-needed trip to Krispy Kreme. I’m pretty sure I ate four donuts. But hey, it was Valentine’s Day and I didn’t have a boyfriend to impress.
Looking back on my attempt (or vow, if you will) not to be alone that day was actually a really good idea. Sure, it didn’t solve any problems of loneliness that we girls might have had back then. But we had each other and made a great memory.
That’s what Valentine’s Day is about, right? We get the chance to make memories with the ones we love.
No, Rachel McAdams’ memory never returned, but at least she had the power to start over, make new memories and have a clean slate.
So this Valentine’s Day, whether you’ve got a special someone or not, at least try to give a little love to those you care for and you can consider the day won.
**Don’t forget that the Nicholas Sparks Valentine’s movie release of 2013 is Safe Haven, starring Josh Duhamel and Julianne Hough. It’s in theaters today.
