Staring at blank walls can be depressing and does not do much for the eyes. Not to mention, you don’t feel at home in a new place until you add your own special touch. So why not devote an afternoon to an inexpensive project that will cover your walls with your favorite designs?

I found this picture here and I immediately knew I wanted to make something similar for my apartment. The DIY canvas picture above is actually fabric covering a canvas, but since I already had canvas, paint, and brushes, I figured I would protect my wallet by avoiding the fabric store.

So, to make a canvas of your own, here is what you need:

If you do not have all of these supplies, check out your local Michael’s website for coupons (or download their app for your phone) before you head out to make a purchase. They almost always have coupons to help you cut the cost… and every penny matters!

Lay out your canvas with some scrap paper underneath and around the edges to protect the surface you are painting on. Pick your paint colors, and start painting!

I painted the entire canvas a cream color similar to the color of the wall. Let the canvas dry between coats. I found I only needed one coat, anyway.

Once the canvas has dried completely, you are ready to begin painting a pattern! Feel free to peruse Pinterest to find ideas other than the one pictured above.

Start painting!

Once your canvas has dried, feel free to add another layer of color, or hang it up wherever you see fit! Since canvas is so light, 3M hooks should do the trick to hang this project in your dorm room!

Hang and enjoy!
