Letter to the Editor

Dear Editor,

In the most recent Stampede published February 15th, there was an article entitled “4 Out of 10 Students are Now Athletes.”  In this article, the graph labeled as Number of Student Athletes on Each team, caught my attention.  In this graph, there is anonymous quote that says, “This is obviously not a graph about team GPA.” It was signed anonymously.

It appears to me that this is a derogatory comment directed toward the baseball team.  I hope this is not the case, but I do not know another way to interpret the comment.  If indeed this editorial comment was directed toward the team, I found it especially distasteful that the quote was anonymous.

I would appreciate any feedback you could give me on my concerns.

Editor’s Note

Yes Tony,

Thank you for pointing that out. It concerns me as well. We noticed that the quote was negative only after it had gone to print, which was my fault. We are taking necessary steps to correct that and do apologize if it was taken in offense.

The Stampede staff in no way intended that to be directed towards the baseball team. It just so happens that they do have the most players on an MC sports team, which was the point of the graphic. That comment should not have been included, and even if it were, it definitely shouldn’t have been labeled anonymous.

Sorry for the confusion.
