Sixteen students from the fine arts and communications departments explored New York City last week, Feb. 27-March 2, as part of a field studies course designed to broaden views of students’ intended majors.

From the Metropolitan Museum of Art to Broadway, nothing went past the eyes of these students while spending five days in the Big Apple.

“The Metropolitan was definitely my favorite part,” said Caleb Nix, a freshman digital media major. “I was not too fond of all the walking because I could not figure out the subway system. New York made me really want to get out into the work place and look for some internships to apply for.”

Visiting places associated with their career goals both informed and inspired the students.

“As a theater major, it is always invigorating to see professional theatre,” said sophomore Darcie Delong. “It rejuvenates my passion and gets my creative juices flowing.”

Delong said spending time with other students in the same academic area was also beneficial.

“It was great to spend time with students from other areas of the fine arts and communications. I do not get to see those people all the time so it was great to have time spent together,” said Delong. “This was my first time going on this trip, I had so much fun, and I hope to go again before I graduate from Milligan.”

Students appreciated the chance to gain perspective about other disciplines outside their own majors.

“New York gave me a new experience with art that I have not seen before, and every bit of artwork influences mine,” said Matthew Rees, a junior film major.

Students said the trip was invigorating, exciting, exceedingly busy and very tiring.

“Next time, I would like to really get a nap in somewhere,” Rees said.

Adjunct Instructor of Theatre Pamela Adolphi, and Professors Alice Anthony, Nicholas Blosser, Richard Major, and Carrie Swanay led the tour.
