Milligan students have started an International Justice Mission (IJM) chapter on campus to bring together various justice efforts on campus under one larger title.

IJM is an umbrella organization for various justice-related efforts, according to Campus Minister Brad Wallace. The organization refers to itself as “a human rights agency that brings rescue to victims of slavery, sexual exploitation and other forms of violent oppression.”

IJM has three goals for its student chapters: to raise their voices in prayer, raise awareness through education and raise support for justice efforts in times of practical monetary need.

“The idea is that we get this not only on students’ radar, but get them engaged with it to see there are actually things you can do to make a difference for actual people… and then actually do those things,” said Wallace. An IJM chapter at Milligan will help to coordinate justice efforts and keep them moving forward from year to year.

“The purpose of our chapter is to give students a tangible way of responding to injustices and the oppression that occurs,” said senior Alexa Higgins, who helped to found the chapter with Wallace.

IJM enables students with different passions to come together and help one another educate more students about those passions.

“We are here to educate, but we are also here to plant the seed for passion among other people, because no problem can be fixed or brought to a larger level if there isn’t heart put into it,” said freshman Eden Greene, who is the education team leader for the group.

The IJM Chapter will hold its first meeting open to all faculty and students interested on April 3 at 8:30 p.m. in Sub7. Sophomore Sarah Underwood is the chapter’s first president.
