Enrollment has reached an all-time high, and this record number of students is spread in more academic fields of study than Milligan has ever offered, according to the registrar’s office.
Although all data for 2013 major trends are not available, it is evident that nursing remains the most popular degree program among traditional undergrad Milligan students, followed by majors in business administration, human performance and exercise science, and psychology.
Milligan’s newest programs, political science and master of science in counseling, have taken off in the second year of existence.
Political science began with 8 students in 2012 and increased to 17 students this year.
The master of counseling program more than tripled enrollment from 9 last year to 31 this year.
Other fluctuations included an increase of 15 students in business administration and an increase of 10 students in Psychology and in English. Enrollment in nursing decreased by 24 students, and biology and computer information systems decreased by six.
Milligan’s trends are not consistent with national trends. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, business ranks first among undergrads, followed by social sciences, history, medicine, and education.
In an upcoming article The Stampede will cover the growth of the political science and master of counseling majors in more detail.
