Though the humanities pervade our first two years of coursework and we fulfill our individual major requirements as an upperclassmen, many students make room in their schedules for a fun course or two. Thankfully, Milligan offers some interesting electibes that you might not be aware of.

1. HPXS 158a: Snow Skiing: Taught every spring semester by Professor John Simonsen, the course is meant to “help students become more comfortable with the activities [and] with the idea they might continue with them after the class is over.” The cost for the class is $195 if you have to rent equipment and $155 if you do not.

2. ART: 253 Introduction to Ceramics: The course is taught by Professor Nick Blosser in the basement of Derthick during the fall semester. Though the arts may not be your thing, this is a class that students may find to be unexpectedly rewarding. Student Emily McGee took the course this past fall and said: “Anything that I can do artistic, especially ceramics and painting, relieves my stress.” Every student can use a little stress relief, making this course perfect for anyone.

3. HPXS 108: Folk Dance and Rhythmical Activities: Professor, Leslie Hanneken, says, “I find that students enrolled in this course find it to be a good release from their traditional course load. Students are able to participate in a non-intimidating physical activity that is easy and fun for all levels of ability!” Students in this course learn many types of dance, including square, line, folk, and social dance.

These are not the only interesting classes here at Milligan College. Though you have to take the courses you need to graduate, it is always good to fit in something that is fun and new to break up the semester.
