Milligan is adding two new majors to its repertoire: economics and music business. Although we know what these majors generally entail, the question is why are these two areas of study important and what will they look like at Milligan?

Dr. David Campbell, chair of business and associate professor of economics, explained that the economics major will introduce three new courses to the business department: Intermediate Microeconomics, Intermediate Macroeconomics and Econometrics.

According to Campbell, recent students have desired further study in economics at the graduate level, but were missing prerequisites to apply for master’s programs.

In a recent email sent by President Greer, Dr. Garland Young, vice president for academic affairs and dean, said the major will allow “students the flexibility to either enter the workforce directly after graduation or pursue graduate school in economics.”

Unlike like the economics major, the new degree in music business will consist of mixed classes outside the music department. Students will take courses in the communications, business and music areas, as well as be involved in a vocal or instrumental performance while studying standard music curriculum. The major will be divided into two tracks – business and technical.

The capstone course for music business requires students to attend a semester-long study in Nashville, Tennessee at the Contemporary Music Center, hosted by the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities (CCCU). Johnny Miller, a business and communications major attended the program in spring of 2013.

“It looks very studious on paper, but it’s real world experience,” he said about the program. Students spend a semester working with professionals in the music industry, learning what it takes to produce music. The semester also includes a week of travel on tour.

The introduction of both the economics and music business majors follow the recent addition of majors in computer science and social work. The latest two are set to begin this fall.
