This fall, Milligan will implement an official scholarship position for Brutus the Buffalo, Milligan’s mascot. The lucky student will maintain the position for their entire time at Milligan.
Previously, the mascot was a volunteer-based role filled by several students as needed. However, Milligan recently decided to create a position in order “to have consistency and someone who’s dependable,” according to Cheer and Dance Coach Ronda Paulson.
The responsibilities of the new mascot include attendance of mascot camp each summer, as well as being present at all basketball games, local events such as college fairs and parades, Homecoming, Be a Buff Day, Connections and other events related to admissions and athletics.
Paulson said that one prospective student has already auditioned, but there will be try outs for incoming students who are interested in the position.
Milligan administration is also excited about the new mascot.
“Someone who is committed to this responsibility and takes the responsibility seriously can add to the atmosphere in a similar fashion as our dance and cheer teams have done,” said Mark Fox, dean of students.
Milligan dancers are equally ready for the new mascot. Alicen Simon, a junior psychology major and dance team member, said cheer and dance camp will be especially fun.
“It’ll be fun to go to camp with him or her and see them connect with bigger schools,” said Simon. “I’m especially excited to see how this affects our school spirit!”
Look for Brutus making noise on campus next fall. The Stampede will report on the official scholarship student when announced.
