The Southbrook Christian Scholarship, a new scholarship created specifically for women in the ministry, was awarded to freshman Olivia Albrecht early this fall.
Olivia received the scholarship after Laura Buffington, spiritual formation pastor at Southbrook Christian Church in Ohio, contacted Phyllis Fox, director of church relations at Milligan College.
Fox said Buffington had a heart for “encouraging women pursuing vocational ministry.”
Women serving in ministry positions is not a new idea for Fox.
“I don’t think it’s controversial,” Fox said. “There are so many opportunities to serve in churches and men and women both need to recognize the gifts God has given them.”
Buffington will now take on the role of mentor to Albrecht. They keep in touch via email.
“It’s an opportunity to be mentored by someone who is really making footprints,” Albrecht said.
Fox says Milligan hopes to continue this relationship with Southbrook Christian Church and also hopes to send more interns to their church.
“I want to see even the HPXS folks up in Ohio,” Fox said. “And I don’t think about the controversy. I don’t see that. I see God using the gifts and talents he’s given men and women.”
