Milligan College is close in launching a computer science major and minor in fall 2013.
The computer science major and minor would be categorized under the scientific learning area. For this new major and minor to occur there needs to be specific math courses required and hiring of a new faculty member.
“No equipment is needed to launch the new program, but potentially down the road there may be a need for more,” said Dr. Garland Young, vice president and academic dean.
Along with the potential addition of a computer science major and minor, new additions are being considered for the master of business administration program.
Faculty and administration are discussing the potential of creating certificates of nine-hour completions under the existing tracks of leadership, operations management, and health care management.
“Milligan’s mission as a residential Christian liberal arts college is to provide majors that students need and are interested in to better fit with Milligan’s campus,” said Young. “Faculty is involved with program development from the get-go. They are the experts on campus.”
Milligan adds about one major, minor or emphasis every year, Young said.
Faculty and administration are to complete five steps for new program development:
There is a checklist that the faculty and administration go through before new program additions are made. Information gathering and marketing research are the first tasks, which consist of economic studies on “hot” jobs and careers in the work force and how they would fit with Milligan.
Young put together a “Strategic Growth Task Force” that consists of faculty and administration to help shepherd potential programs through all of the appropriate steps that are in the faculty handbook.
