The Milligan College men’s soccer program hosted a soccer camp for local youth Monday through Friday last week. The camp attracted 22 children between the ages of 5 and 9, including students on spring break and some children of Milligan faculty.
Head coach Adam Laney and the newly-acquired assistant coach Jason Keever both helped with the camp.
“The main purpose of this youth clinic is to give back to the local youth and to raise funds to benefit the men’s soccer program here at Milligan,” said Laney.
Roughly $2,600 were raised.
The children participated in a wide variety of games and drills, from tag, capture the ball, and small 5-on-5 scrimmages. Along with a soccer clinic in the morning, the children had a lunch break and leisure time in the afternoon.
“I had a lot of fun,” said Jobe, a camper from the Johnson City area. “We got to play soccer, watch movies and even swim.”
Throughout the week, volunteers from the men’s team lent their advice and assisted the coaches in leading activities.
“It’s always fun working with young children,” said Keever, a former Division I athlete at Campbell University. “Teaching soccer fundamentals from a young age is always a key to success in the long run.”
The future of the program is uncertain, although Head Coach Adam Laney has big hopes.
” I would like to expand it to an overnight team camp in the summer and eventually add goalkeeper specific sessions and satellite day camps or team trainings.”
