Milligan’s campus has seen an influx of pirates over the last few days as the theater department prepares for its production of “Treasure Island” this weekend. An exciting adventure based on the classic novel by Robert Louis Stevenson, “Treasure Island” packs plenty of action, humor and pirates into an hour.
The cast of 17 students and two faculty members has been practicing since the beginning of the semester in preparation for this week’s performances.
“It’s fun playing a pirate,” said senior Alan Stengel, who plays the pirate Tiny in the show. Stengel had his acting debut in a fifth-grade production of “Treasure Island.”
A number of elementary students attended Wednesday night’s preview of the play. They clapped and squealed loudly during the curtain call, especially when senior Alex Henderson, who played the lead role of Jim Hawkins, took his bow. Twelve-year-old Jake Brown said that he enjoyed the show and “thought it was funny.”
The show received praise from adults as well.
“I thought it was fantastic,” said communications professor Carrie Swanay, “a great family show.”
“Treasure Island” will be playing in the Gregory Center’s McGlothlin-Street Theatre Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. with a 10:30 a.m. matinee on Saturday. Admission is $5. Tickets are available in the Milligan College bookstore, or by calling (423) 461-8733.
