Beth Crouch from Bristol, Tenn., has been an adjunct faculty member in nursing since 2007. She was named a new assistant professor of nursing this year.

What brought you to Milligan?

I worked with (Assistant Professor of Nursing) Rita Trivette until she finished her master’s degree, and I have been the adjunct instructor for nursing for Milligan for a few years now.

What originally got you into nursing?

I went on a medical mission trip in Mexico and I always knew I wanted to be in health care. There was a nurse there, Evanell Perry, who influenced me and I knew nursing was what I was called to do.

What is some of your previous nursing experience?

I have worked at several medical centers. I worked at Indian Path Medical Center in Kingsport, Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, and Johnson City Medical Center, where I still work a couple of days a month as a clinical educator.

What is your favorite class to teach?

I love my critical care and research classes.

Why so?

My background is in critical care and I love taking care of critical-care patients and research, or evidence-based practice, because of how that influences and changes what we do in the nursing field.

What are some of your interests outside of teaching?

I love to read, especially murder mysteries. I love playing with my kids, singing and sports. I am very excited about football season.

What is something interesting about you?

I have been on several medical mission trips to Mexico, England, inner cities in Indiana, Grundy (Va.) and Kentucky. Also, I have a bachelor’s degree in psychology, so that’s pretty cool.

What would you say to a prospective freshman thinking about going into a nursing major?

Nursing is a field of unlimited opportunity, but to be successful you really need a heart for people.
