It’s a great time to be a guy at Milligan College. TWIRP Week, which stands for The Woman Is Required to Pay, is an annual tradition at Milligan that took place last week.

TWIRP Week is a time for women to ask men to participate in various activities throughout the week. This year, however, events had to be planned to cater to the growing gap between the male and female ratio on Milligan’s campus.

Among the 214 freshmen, the largest incoming class in Milligan’s history, the female population outnumbers the male population almost two-to-one with 132 women compared to 82 men.  This made planning activities for TWIRP Week quite difficult.

In years past, the Student Government Association has planned the TWIRP Week events. This year, the Campus Activities Board took over the responsibility due to SGA’s role in planning the homecoming weekend and inauguration events for President Bill Greer.

Lindsey Meding, the campus community coordinator for CAB, oversaw the planning of this year’s events.

“We wanted to make these events that you could TWIRP people with,” Meding said.

She said the events were planned to be “fun” and “lighthearted” to encourage students to take part, even without a date. She added that there appeared to be more participation from students this year than in years past and that women are taking this tradition a lot more seriously than usual.

SGA President Shannon Slaughter, who was part of the TWIRP Week planning committee last year, weighed in on how the events have changed.

“I would say that they’re less focused on dating,” she said. “TWIRP Week has become more of just a community builder, [and a way to] get to know people on campus.”

This year’s events included a movie night, a stomping lesson from the Milligan Stompede, and a service project.
