Dr. Mark Matson is leaving his role as Milligan’s academic dean after next month.
Matson, whose official title is vice president for academic affairs and dean, will leave his position on Dec. 31 for a sabbatical when he will take up his research and publishing interests.
Dr. Garland Young, currently associate vice president for graduate and professional studies, has been named interim academic dean, effective Jan. 1. A search committee for a permanent academic dean will be formed before the start of the spring semester.
“(Matson’s) real passion is in teaching and writing,” President Bill said. “He has done a great job as dean and we are very grateful for the work he has done. We will explore future ways to partner with him.”
Young came to Milligan in June 2010. Since then he has led the coordination and recruiting for Milligan’s non-traditional students. Young assists in the development of new programs, curriculum assessment and faculty training.
“I’m looking forward to direct connection with more traditional students,” said Dr. Young. “Being in a classroom is a great treasure.”
In addition to his new role, Young will teach an upper-level Greek course next semester.
As interim academic dean, Dr. Young will “keep the ball rolling” with academic affairs. He will conduct faculty searches, monitor troubleshooting in the classroom and be in communication with faculty and staff.
“I’m being called to help the college in another way and I’m prepared to serve Milligan in whatever role I’m in,” said Young.
Courtney Kieslich, current director of graduate admissions, will fill Young’s duties as interim director of graduate and professional studies.
