Milligan Soccer Team Raises Money for Cancer

The Milligan men’s soccer team traded in their orange and black jerseys for purple and pink during last Saturday’s playoff game against Bluefield College.

The purple jerseys were worn for a special cause: raising money for cancer research.

Students and faculty had the opportunity to bid in a silent auction for each player’s jersey with the bidding starting at 20 dollars.

Rachel Severns, a senior child life major, participated but was quickly outbid.

“I bid 25 dollars, but someone doubled my bid and raised it to 50,” said Severns. “The money goes to a good cause though, so I’m not upset.”

Assistant Coach Jason Keever came up with the idea as a fundraiser to raise money for “Kick it to Cancer”, an organization founded on the basis that many cancer patients going through treatment lose their ability to participate in active sports.

“It provided everyone the opportunity to step outside themselves and play for something bigger-something that those with cancer can no longer do themselves,” said Keever “They are the ones fighting. We are in the playoffs for a sport, but they are in the playoffs for their lives.”

Senior soccer player Andrew Stewart was excited about the opportunity to participate in the event.

“Kick it to Cancer is a great idea,” said Stewart, “it not only gets our soccer team involved, but the whole campus. It allows us to get to know a lot of other people, while also raising money for cancer.”

The money is currently being collected, but Coach Keever estimates the total to be roughly 450 dollars.

The Buffaloes advanced in the AAC tournament with a 6-0 victory over Bluefield College and will return to action as they host the AAC Semifinals and Finals this Friday and Saturday at Anglin Field.
