Last Thursday evening roughly 85 students gathered on Derthick Commons for the first “Walk In The Word” worship service organized by Milligan’s Student Government Association.
The service opened with a monologue by senior Carshala Davis, followed by students singing together, and listening to a message from Scripture brought by SGA Chaplain Zach Maclellan. This service was the first of three services planned for the semester.
SGA parliamentarian Jeff Preptit said “SGA has always had a spiritual aspect.”
But this year the spiritual aspect is being “revamped,” SGA President Danica Collins said. “We are just focusing on God’s word, our main fuel.”
After reflecting on last semester, SGA decided to utilize the chaplain position more and create a Spiritual Life Branch.
Maclellan was appointed chaplain this year, and is the head of the Spiritual Life Branch, made up of students including Torian Sitton, Carshala Davis, Zach Hollifield, Anne Varghese and Jeff Preptit.
The Spiritual Life Branch recognizes that not all students come from the same type of christian background and wants to offer a service that differs from chapel and vesper services.
The group wanted a service that would allow people to come together who may have never heard the basics of the life of Jesus.
“We want people to have a more general knowledge of the life of Christ and what it means to us today” Maclellan said.
The number of students who attended the first event was encouraging to the group.
“We are praying it grows more” Davis said.
Sophomore Christopher Shaw enjoyed the outdoor service. “I liked the atmosphere and the message a lot” Shaw said. “You could tell Zach wanted to share God’s love.”
The next “Walk In The Word” will be held at the end of October with the date to be announced. There will be a service with another teaching from the life of Jesus.
