Thirteen Milligan students and four ETSU students made the trip to Indianapolis last weekend to attend the International Conference on Missions (ICOM).

Students who attended ranged from freshman to senior and had diverse majors.  Some of these major include chemistry, exercise science, and communications.

Senior Alexa Higgins, a chemistry major, has gone to a medical missionary conference before.  When Higgins’ boss, Campus Minister Brad Wallace, asked her to come as a van driver, she jumped on the opportunity.

“It’s a really good way to create new relationships with people from school,” Higgins said. “If someone’s not quite sure about missions, it’s a good place to go find out about missions and to learn from people who have experienced it first-hand.”

At the convention, missionaries and other prominent workers in the field came to speak during two main sessions daily.  In between sessions, students were encouraged to walk through exhibits where they could connect with different missions organizations.

Travis Weeks, resident director of Webb Hall, also went along for the trip.  He and his wife, Emily, are starting their careers as missionaries with Christian Missionary Fellowship (CMF).  In January, they plan on moving to Ethiopia to join a church planting team and help create church leaders.

“Things like this help you be able to discern God’s call,” Weeks said.  “You can come into contact with ways to do missions that you might not have thought about.  You know, not a lot of people don’t know the need for being a vet in the field.  All the ways you hear that people are doing ministry is really exciting.”

Students spent from Thursday night until Sunday morning at the convention and hope to return next year to Indianapolis.
