With the start of a new semester, SGA met Thursday with plans to get all of campus involved in upcoming events, especially with the budding End It Movement.

The End It Movement is an organization devoted to educating people about a worldwide problem: 27 million people are enslaved today throughout 161 different countries. The movement works to enable others to stand up for those who are enslaved via pledges to stand up for the cause and monetary gifts to the organizations connected the movement, such as Free the Slaves, Love 146 and Not for Sale, among others.

SGA President Danica Collins first heard of this movement from Passion 2013, a conference held in Atlanta to spread the word of Jesus to college-aged students.

“We’re the generation to actually do something about it and I saw it as an opportunity to bring something I learned back to campus,” said Collins.

SGA hopes to participate in the End It Movement 24 hour stand on March 6, when people all around the world will physically stand up for those who cannot stand up for themselves.  Students can sign up for 30 minute or one hour slots to stand, so that for 24 hours at least one student on Milligan College’s campus will be standing up for those who are enslaved.

“The more of campus that’s involved in it, the better it will be,” said Collins, who is also working to partner with ETSU for this event.

Along with the End it Movement, SGA discussed their plans for an upcoming coin drive, a Walk in the Word event, and the Buff Card.

The Buff Card is a discount card for local businesses that, when sold to the community, will raise money for SGA events and charities that SGA supports.

“Our goal is to get 20-25 businesses, so while we are focusing on Elizabethton businesses, there will definitely also be businesses in Johnson City,” said Shannon Jewett, business branch leader and sophomore class president.

SGA meets weekly on Thursdays at 9:15 p.m. in the Student Union Building. All students are welcome to attend the meetings.
