What Are We Eating, Really?

Although healthy eating is the most popular New Year’s Resolution for 2013, Milligan students are saying this goal is nearly impossible to achieve in the cafeteria.

Students opposed to Milligan’s cafeteria have even started a Facebook page entitled, “C’mon Man.”  The site’s 163 members contribute through sharing pictures of certain meals.  These pictures include captions with the contributor’s opinion on the food.

Sophomore Sierra Gay posted along with her picture, “Last time I checked…I signed up for the meal plan, not Fear Factor.”  The post was “liked” by 18 fellow students and seen by 82.

Anne Varghese, a freshman GOAH scholar, is more concerned about how healthy the cafeteria’s food is, not just the taste.  She comes from an Indian background and says she grew up being raised by highly health-conscious parents.

“We usually eat just plain meats, chicken, curry or other different types of food, and I’m not used to the caf food as much,” Varghese said.

Milligan’s cafeteria works with Pioneer College Caterers. Varghese said she attempted to look up the nutritional facts from their website but was unable to find any.

Varghese commented on the difficulty of maintaining a healthy diet while at the same time remaining on the meal plan.

“Mom is always worrying I’m not taking in enough protein while I’m training for my half marathon, because I choose not to eat any meat here.  The only thing I stay close to is the salad bar,” Varghese said.

Director of Food Services Mark Henry is in charge of ordering all of the cafeteria’s food on a weekly basis.  He explained that supplying students with a complete list of nutritional facts would be “nearly impossible” and require someone working “over eight hours a day just searching through the ingredients we use.”

If students come to the cafeteria needing special assistance in finding nutritional values, however, Henry and his team will put their heads together to figure out what he or she can eat that day.

“We try to accommodate everyone the best we can,” Henry said.
