The SUB7 Coffeehouse was overcrowded with students on Jan. 30 with some students even standing in the hallway. Why was the house so packed? The theme of the night was “’80s and ’90s.”

For the first Open Mic Night of the semester, SUB7 Event Coordinator Rebecca Miller wanted to do something different to excite students in a new way.

“The night was filled with songs that we all grew up with, songs our generation knows every word of,” said Luis Treviño. “Open Mic Night is a fun way to hang out with friends and see friends perform. This one was cool because it was different from what they’ve done before.”

While planning for this semester, Miller looked over Open Mic Nights that were done in the past.

“I saw that some students had put on themed events, and thought I might as well give it a shot,” Miller said. “It was definitely a big hit –  over a hundred students packed into that tiny room!”

Performances were scheduled to begin at 8:30, yet nearly all seating was full by 8:10.

Sophomore Samara Clarke performed a mash-up of some major hits from the ‘90s. Clarke said she wanted to do something different, and incorporate more than just one song.

“I really liked how the crowd interacted with everyone. I totally missed a note and everyone just laughed, clapped and cheered me on,” Clarke said.

The night was “definitely a success” according to Anna Lennox, member of the Campus Activities Board.

“I love that Open Mic Night gets to showcase students’ talents and create an opportunity for students to do so,” she said.

Miller is looking forward to the one remaining Open Mic Night of the semester. The date is yet to be announced.
