Ah, TWIRP Week. It has begun. The only week in the semester where the girl gets the guy or attempts to ask him out, has begun. You can plan fun dates off campus or attend the many social events provided for you at Milligan, and it all culminates with the Sadie Hawkins dance on Friday night. A quick heads up: If you don’t wear khaki pants, don’t bother showing up. But really, despite all the chatter and competition for all the cuties on campus, what is this week all about?
I’ve been quietly observing TWIRP Week for all of four years now, and if you ask me, TWIRP Week is about chutzpah. Now bear with me because this may be a foreign word to some of you. Deriving from the Hebrew language, chutzpah actually has a naturally negative connotation. However, the modern English usage of the word describes the amount of confidence or courage an individual has to make a shocking statement or audacious action.
Over the past two weeks, I’ve seen photographs and heard stories about freshmen, sophomore and junior girls who planned intricate meetings to ask out their crushes. I have to say, despite my seniority and lack of time for such activities, I would dive right into this tradition. It’s quite clever actually and gives us the chance to test ourselves. Good for you girls of Milligan. Show your chutzpah and wearing the big girl pants! There aren’t many opportunities in life where couples get to switch roles, so take advantage of it. Sweep him off his feet! Be his dame in shining silk! Treat him to a night on the town!
