Milligan College’s missions club Apostolos is offering students a chance to serve the community of New Orleans on sight this spring break, in a partnership with CrossRoads Missions, a ministry that began at Milligan 20-years-ago.

“We’ll be bringing the church and community together by reaching out to the city of New Orleans,” said Angela Highfield, chair of Apostolos. “We will be acting in the community while helping rebuild.”

CrossRoads began in the basement of Milligan’s Sutton Hall and has grown to a Louisville, Ky. based group with over a hundred thousand participants. There are satellite ministries in Cincinnati; Appalachian Kentucky; Piedras Negras, Mexico; Louisville, Ky.; New Orleans; and Los Angeles.

The organization acts as a conduit between communities in need and Christian groups and individuals looking to serve. According to the group’s website, “Mission teams are involved in multiple areas of ministry including: construction, medical missions, education, discipleship, evangelism, worship, and disaster relief.”

Milligan students have the opportunity of working with the New Orleans satellite, which partners with local missions groups such as St. Roch Community Church and Desire Street Ministries. Participating students leave on Sunday, March 9 and return to campus on Saturday, March 15. On weekdays, the group will renovate homes and work with inner cities ministries and church plants. Students will have free time to explore New Orleans on Wednesday, March 12.

The trip costs $350 per person. This fee covers construction, outreach and worship supplies, as well as meals and lodging. Additional money will be needed to cover the cost of the free day. Students interested in participating should contact Angela Highfield at anhighfield@my.milligan.edu for more information.
