Senior Monica Fife’s paintings supply the eye with a multitude of earthy colors and appreciation of the simplicity in nature.

Fife, a fine art major with an emphasis in art, opened her senior art exhibition in Derthick Art Gallery last Sunday, Feb. 23.

When you look down through the gallery, the theme of her show is evident: Butterflies. You may be wondering, why butterflies?

Fife is not your average Milligan student. A non-traditional student from Brazil, she has gone threw many trials in life and praises God everyday for the simple beauty in nature that he gave us.

Fife first heard about Milligan through her husband’s family that knew the Jeanes. After four years of humanities, bible and of course, art courses, Fife is about to complete her undergraduate education. This was celebrated through her senior art show.

As a brain tumor survivor, Fife mentioned to The Stampede that she felt like a butterfly through her hard experience. She felt that she had to overcome being a caterpillar or the rough patch in her life, and come out on the other side like a butterfly.

Fife’s sketches and paintings in watercolor and oil will be on display through the rest of the week. Senior Kate Handzlik’s opening reception for her photography will be on Sunday, March 2.
