Beginning in the spring of 2007, the annual water tag game Gottcha included about 80 participants this semester, mainly freshman students.

The individual based competition starts in February each spring semester and lasts for about two months. Annual participation ranges from 70-90 students.

“It was a pretty eventful first day for Gottcha,” Director of Campus Activities Katy Mosby said.

An estimate of 30 participants was “out” by the next day according to Mosby. As of last Thursday, 20 people remain in the game.

Senior Hannah Olson and sophomore Rachel Hurley made the list of participants and assigned each person their target.

“This year it was easy to get student participation because so many were already excited to play,” Olson said.

Compared to past years, there has been “surprisingly low drama so far” said Mosby. Participants have been resolving conflict on their own she continued.

There are plans to make the game a team sport in the future.

“It would bring more people into the game that wouldn’t typically play,” Mosby said.

Last year approximately five students withdrew and 10-15 followed suit this year after gaining knowledge of the individuality of the game.

“I felt like a secret agent for a few days,” freshman and communications major Brittany Shaffer said.

Besides the enjoyment received from running around campus in hot pursuit of an opponent with a water gun, the winner receives a $15 gift card of their choice. New incentives including an award for the most “gets” and the last man standing are also recognized.

The contest is open to both students and faculty.
