Milligan hosted a volunteer fair held in the Gregory Center on Sept. 26th.
The fair is sponsored by the ISL (Institute for Servant Leadership) and LINC organization (Linking Individuals to the Needs of the Community).
Director of ISL, Beth Anderson supervised the fair, and said the fair helps students who are not from the area.
“It is a great how students support the event, “ Anderson said. Not only to give a chance to explore their interests, but to help share in God’s kingdom.”
Giving away free donuts, Grace Fellowship Church knew how to catch a college student’s eye.
Connections and hospitality coordinator of GFC, Malia Grant, recruited students to volunteer and be part of the children and student ministry or get an internship at the church.
“This is a great environment for college kids to plug in and be a part of a local church,” Grant said.
Children’s minister at Crossroads Children’s Ministry, Jim Goehner was the spokesperson for the volunteer fair. He was excited to represent his church and the work he does.
“Hopefully we will pick up a couple of volunteers,” Goehner said. “Even if we only pick up one or two, it’s definitely worth it.”
He wants more volunteers to help with kids during church services and possibly join in mission trips.
Chaplain of Pine Ridge Care and Rehabilitation Center, Bryan Smith offered students lollipops and asked students for volunteer service.
“A lot of young kids choose not to volunteer because it’s out of sight and out of mind,” Smith said. “They are still people and enjoy doing activities with the kids like doing manicures or reading the newspaper.”
Groups represented at the fair included: Appalachian Service Project, Good Samaritan Industries, First Christian Church, Carver Recreation, Interfaith Hospitality Network of Greater Johnson City, Wellington Place, Coalition for Kids, American Cancer Society, Pine Ridge Care and Rehabilitation Center, and the Salvation Army.
