Originally known as the Cross Cultural Missions Committee, Apostolos is the newly renamed student led group that seeks to share the love of Christ by living missionally on campus, in the community and across the world.

Apostolos is the Greek word for “messenger” or “apostle.”

“It’s one word that people can remember,” says senior Angela Highfield, Apostolos chair. “And this word encompasses who we hope to be. We want to be ‘messengers’ or witnesses to the gospel.”

The group’s purpose is to help people lead a missional life, give them an opportunity to experience different cultures, be active in the community and inspire a love for missions.

This semester kicks off with Missions Emphasis Week, which is September 30-October 4. The theme is “Ordinary,” highlighting that Jesus called ordinary people to be his disciples.

Monday’s event is a prayer night on the Village Commons from 8 p.m.-9 p.m. This prayer will concentrate on campus wide, local, national and international missions. Tuesday will emphasize service by giving students the opportunity to give back and help professors with different needs they have both on campus and at their homes.

Milligan alum and missionary Bradford Jones will speak during a pizza dinner on Wednesday night in the community room of Jeanes Hall from 5:15 p.m.-6:15 p.m. “A Coffee House” night on Thursday will exhibit both the photography and stories of students’ recent mission trips. The week will close with a Justin Klump concert in SUB7 at 8 p.m., co-hosted by Apostolos and the Campus Activity Board. Spiritual formation credits will be given to attendants of Monday and Wednesday night events.

Apostolos, like many other organizations on campus, plans to partner and build relationships with others for the betterment of Milligan and the surrounding community.

“We want to be active out in the community, but we want to be living missionaries here as well,” explained Highfield.

Apostolos intends to work with the Johnson City chapter of Family Promise, which helps homeless and low-income families achieve independence. Other possible future plans for the spring semester include a trip to either Louisiana or Mississippi to build homes for those in need and work alongside International Justice Mission to help promote Justice Week.

Students who are interested in getting involved can attend showings of missional focused films that the organization will show later in the year. The group also welcomes new members. Past missions experience is not required. For more information on how to get involved contact Angela Highfield at: anhighfield@my.milligan.edu
