Approximately forty Milligan students gave the gift of life on Wednesday when the Marsh Regional Blood Center Bloodmobile visited campus. The event, which took place from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m., was organized by the Student Government Association.

“I like saving lives, and plus you get a free T-shirt,” said junior Alyssa Edgecombe, who is a routine donor. According to marshblood.com, someone in our region needs blood every 21 minutes, and each donation of blood helps to save as many as three lives.

Marsh Regional Blood Center, which is named after its founder Lois Marsh, serves as the local blood bank dedicated to collecting and maintaining blood supplies to meet the Tri-Cities’ needs Marsh operates collection centers in Bristol, Kingsport, and Johnson City, but the majority of their donations are given through their bloodmobiles.

In her role as the newly elected SGA Vice President, Danica Collins organized the event with help from the previous SGA Vice President, Matt Hicks. “Overall it was good event,” Collins said, “I now have fresh ideas and hopefully can make blood drives in the future even more successful.”

“The turnout was not as profound as I had hoped but we still saved lives, and that was the main goal,” said Collins. “This event was a great foundation for me.  It helped me prepare for my duties next year.”
